How Parlay Bets Work
A parlay combines two or more individual bets into a single wager. All legs must win for the parlay to pay out. The advantage is a much higher potential payout than betting each leg individually — but the risk is also higher, since one loss means the entire parlay loses.
How We Calculate It
Each leg's American odds are converted to decimal odds. All decimal odds are multiplied together to get the combined decimal odds. Your payout equals your stake multiplied by the combined decimal odds.
- Positive odds (+150): Decimal = (odds / 100) + 1 = 2.50
- Negative odds (-110): Decimal = (100 / |odds|) + 1 = 1.909
Frequently Asked Questions
How are parlay payouts calculated?
Parlay payouts are calculated by converting each leg's American odds to decimal odds and multiplying them together. The combined decimal odds are then multiplied by your stake to get the total payout. For example, two legs at -110 each produce combined decimal odds of about 3.64, so a $100 bet would pay roughly $364.
Are parlays a good bet?
Parlays are generally worse for bettors than straight bets because the sportsbook's vig compounds with each leg added. However, correlated parlays and +EV parlays built from individually sharp legs can still offer value. The key is to only parlay bets that are each positive expected value on their own.
How many legs can you put in a parlay?
Most sportsbooks allow parlays with anywhere from 2 to 12 or more legs. Some books allow up to 25 legs on same-game parlays. The more legs you add, the higher the potential payout but the lower the probability of winning. Professional bettors typically stick to 2-4 leg parlays to keep the math manageable.
What happens if one leg of a parlay pushes?
If one leg of a parlay results in a push (tie), that leg is removed from the parlay and the payout is recalculated with the remaining legs. For example, a 4-leg parlay with one push becomes a 3-leg parlay. The rest of the legs still need to win for the parlay to pay out.
