Reds vs Cubs predictions

Looking at the Cincinnati Reds’ lineup heading into this rubber match, I’m keeping a close eye on Elly De La Cruz and TJ Friedl, who have both been sparking a lot of excitement lately. De La Cruz feels like he’s always one swing away from changing the game—expect him to mix it up with a bit of power, a possible homer and maybe a couple of hits, plus his signature speed on the bases adds a whole layer of unpredictability for the Cubs’ defense. TJ Friedl is quietly steady, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him reach base multiple times, maybe grab a hit or two and set the table for some run-scoring chances. If these two can get the offense rolling, and if Nick Martinez can give the Reds five solid innings on the mound—keeping hard contact to a minimum—Cincinnati could really make things uncomfortable for Chicago at Wrigley.

On the other side, the Cubs' bats have been humming all season, and that lineup depth is tough to handle. Pete Crow-Armstrong is one name that jumps out; he’s got great pop and the kind of speed that can turn singles into doubles and make things happen. I like him to have a multi-hit day and maybe sneak in an extra-base hit along the way. Don’t overlook Seiya Suzuki either; he’s been clutch driving in runs, so you know if the Cubs get runners on early, the odds are strong he’ll cash somebody in. Nico Hoerner is the guy for consistent contact up and down the order, and you can practically pencil him in for a hit or two as well. Meanwhile, Jameson Taillon is poised to go deep into the game and, if he locates his pitches, strike out his share of Reds hitters while limiting the damage.

When it comes to picking a winner, this one feels like it could be tight for the first few innings—both Martinez and Taillon have tools to keep hitters guessing. Still, the Cubs’ combination of patient, high-contact offense and aggressive base running just tips the balance for me. With Chicago owning one of the best home records in the division and a knack for putting up runs in bunches, I see them grinding out a late advantage and taking the series. But hey, that's why we watch—baseball always leaves room for surprises. Who’s your pick?
